Our views on life build upon the knowledge and experiences that are accumulated throughout our upbringing. Things that our parents teach us, things that we learn through friends, teachers, school, t.v, the internet. It is sort of an endless, open, imaginative, free of control and free of rules kind of schooling that we go through all throughout our lives. Every piece of information that we learn through experiences is taken into account and thought of critically to build a perception or a viewpoint.
All Jack has known for the 5 years that he is been exposed to his surroundings, is a 12 by 12 room that merely has the necessities of life. But that's all he's ever known. The same story books, the same food, the same bed, the same view of the sky, the same kitchen, the same activities. All these things constitute his own little world in a small room in the middle of who knows where. This made me think of the movie The Terminal with Tom Hanks where he lands in America and is not allowed to leave the airport for legal purposes. He creates his own world in the airport much like what Ma and Jack have made.

As Jack gets older, his mother reveals some things to him that are rather mind boggling and profound to him. He finds out that there is a whole world out there to be explored and that everything that he sees on t.v is in fact, with real people in real places. Jack is thrown off by this because since he could remember, he's been told nothing about what's outside Room.
"That's ridiculous, Ma was never in Outside."
Jack's life is limited to being under that ceiling, where 'sky' is literally the limit, being the Room. He grows up knowing nothing outside of the Room. Similarly, Mr. Navorski in The Terminal doesn't really know or care for the world outside of the airport and makes his life inside the airport.
As I continued to read the book, I also noticed how Jack is happy. He doesn't notice the fact that he's missing out on life pretty much. But because the Room is all he knows, in his mind, he has everything he needs.
"I like it here, with you."
Jack fails to understand his mother's frustration about being stuck in the Room. He doesn't understand his mother because he hasn't had the same experiences outside the Room, none at all, in fact.
Old Nick has been a catalyst in Jack's life, at times. at the end of the first section, Jack's mother finally reveals to him how Old Nick kidnapped her at the age of 19 and kept her in the Room for 7 years. She is now 26. Old Nick plays a huge role in Jack's and his mother's life because he brings them everything they need to stay alive and everything Jack's mother needs to raise him.

Much like Jack and his mother, Walter White from Breaking Bad also relied on a man that he doesn't even know, to bring him supplies to survive while Walt lives isolated from human civilization to stay away from the police and the special forces that are after him.
But how far will Old Nick go to help Nick and his mother? Mr. Navorski got out of the airport in one piece, but Walt didn't survive his journey... What will happen to Jack and his mother?
I can't wait to find out!
